More information : [ST 5222 2279] ST. MARY MINOR CHURCH [GT] (Site of) (1) The church of St. Mary Minor, Ilchester was founded before 1241 and united with St. Mary Major [ST 52 SW 42] in 1502. The foundations of the church were found in 1950 during trench digging for a sewer. The trench crossed the N. and S. walls of the nave and enabled its position to be accurately fixed. [See plan AO/64/303/3]. Fragments of 13th c. encaustic files and a small piece of human skull were found among the debris from the trench. (2) The site of the church has been overlaid by a car park and nothing is visible on the ground. (3)
The Church of St Mary Minor was founded before 1227-28 and became the property of the hospital of Holy Trinity, or Whitehall (ST 52 SW 38) in 1242. The parish was united with that of St Mary Major and St John the Baptist in 1502. The building was still standing in Leland's time (c 1540), but had disappeared a century later. (4) |
