Hob Uid: 195531
Location :
North Somerset
Clevedon
Grid Ref : ST4183071870
Summary : A 16th century tower situated on the west of a hill behind Clevedon Court. It was replaced between 1727-1742 by a summerhouse and was in ruins by the late 18th century.
More information : [ST 41837187] WAKE'S TOWER [L.B.] (site of) (1)

WAKES TOWER (2) WAKES NEW ELTON'S Tower (2). This was replaced c.1738
by a summer house which itself was a ruin by the late 18thc. The
16thc. tower was on the west of the hill behind Clevedon Court. (2-5)

The summer house seems to have been built by the second Sir Abraham
Elton between 1727 and 1742. It was at ST 42137186, where its
foundations are still visible. A tower, shown in this position on
a pre. 1727 painting at Clevedon Court (AO/58/181/6), is said to be
Wake's Tower (a).

Although the evidence is not conclusive it strongly suggests that
the early 18th cent. summer house was erected on the site of Wake's
Tower. (6)
