More information : [ST 41767280] Earthwork [G.T.] [Area: ST 41877277] Field System [G.T.]. (1) An entrenchment, south-west of Walton Castle Hill, is formed by two lengths of bank (2). On the slope below it is an ancient, probably Celtic, field system (3) The enclosure, in West Wood, is formed by a weak bank of stone and earth, averaging 0.4 m.high on the inner face and from 1-2.0m high on the outer face (due to the north and east slope). There is no outer ditch and the southern boundary consists of precipitous slopes. It does not appear to be defensive but rather to be associated with the local system. An east-west bank, centred at ST 41507263, follows the crest of a very steep north slope and, although of obscure date and purpose, is not defensive. The area has been afforested. The published survey - O.S.25" 1937, has been revised.(4) Beale states that within the 'earthwork' is a slight mound enclosed by a circle of stones flush with the ground, but this cannot be located. The bank at ST 41507263 has been destroyed by a new road. The field system, centred at ST 41657290, is apparently of an I.A./R.B. date. There are well preserved lynchets and stony banks in the wooded areas but these have been partially obliterated on the golf course and completely ploughed out in the adjacent arable fields. This location falls within the area mapped from aerial photographs by English Heritage's Severn Estuary Rapid Coastal Zone Assessment (RCZA) National Mapping Programme (NMP) aerial survey, but no field system was identified on this spot on Castle Hill during that survey as the area is obscured by the trees of West Wood.
