More information : ST 479716: A Roman villa, on the south bank of the river Land Yeo, was excavated by the Clevedon & District Arch. Soc., from 1950-1953. It was occupied from c.250 A.D. until early 4th c. A Medieval wall, constructed from the debris of the villa, crosses the original courtyard. Medieval potsherds were found in abundance and a coin of Henry III. A series of vaguely defined terraces lower down the slope yielded only Medieval ware. [See plan repn.] (1)
The site of the villa has been marked on an estate map at ST 47977156. Until quite recently it was visible, during prolonged dry weather, as a parch mark. A vast quantity of topsoil has since been dumped on the site (a). The finds from this villa have been widely dispersed. Pottery, several 4th c coins and a finial are in the possession of Mrs. Legg. Other material is with Mr. G. Usher, Anglesea House, Victoria Rd, Clevedon (b). (2)
