More information : [ST 4995 3889] CHAPEL [GT] [ST 4994 3890] ALMSHOUSES [GT]. (1) St. John the Baptist's Hospital, Glastonbury, was founded probably in the 12th c. the site being moved in 1246. It was for poor and infirm persons. It was re-founded in 1512 by Abbot Bere, as an almshouse and chapel for women, and dissolved after 1545 (2). The hall and domestic buildings have disappeared but the chapel remains and within it is preserved the original alter. Dedication not known (3). (2-3) The chapel, now known as St. Patrick's, and the west entrance, at ST 49923888, are all that remain of the hospital. They both date from Abbot Bere's foundation of 1512.
