More information : [42182952] ROMAN VILLA [GS] (Site of) (1)
Roman villa situated between Wood Road and Mill Brook about the 200 ft. contour. It was excavated in 1861, but no proper account was ever published. Drawings of two mosaics are in Taunton Museum. Coins include Allectus, Constantius I, Chlorus and Constantius, while the roof material is of the usual tile with some Devon slate. (2)
Dewar has been unable to detect any surface indications after ploughing at the site shown by O.S., and suggests that the postion may be nearer the Mill Brook. Pottery from the site was given to Taunton Museum in 1861 by W.W. Munckton. (4)
Air photographs negative. (3-5)
The field is ploughed and there are no surface remains to corroborate the O.S. siting. Nevertheless Dewar's suggestion seems unlikely because of the steep slopes to the south of the present site. Many finds from the site are in Taunton Museum, Acc. Nos. A 344-358, 2875 & 6. (6)
SO 29 Listed as the site of a Roman villa. (7)
