More information : [ST 49692909] ROMAN BUILDING [GS] (site of) (1)
Colt Hoare (3) mentions a villa about 1/2 mile N.E. of Somerton, on the line of the road to Charlton Mackrell and just N. of the R. Cary. Excavated by Hassell, who found Roman pottery tiles, flues, and coins of Constantine, Antoninus, Victorinus, Posthumus etc., with foundations of tessellated floors. Other coins have since been picked up nearby: two denarii of Hadrian, a '1st brass' of Gordian and some '3rd brass' from Constantine to Theodosius indicating 3rd-4th c. occupation. This is Haverfield's No. 38, and No. 6 on Hasell's map, (3) and is shown on O.S. map in the roadway, following Colt Hoare's text. The siting is about 200 ft. from the right bank of the Cary just below the 50 ft. contour. ST 4970 2910 (4). T he end of what appears to be an ancient (? Roman) wall [at 'A'] consisting of 7 courses of blue lias blocks, seen projecting from the right bank of the R. Cary. The presumed course of the wall can be traced as a definite ridge (5). AP's negative. (2-6)
A few pieces of lias can be seen along the river bank but nowhere do they form a wall. The broad ridge referred to seems to be an extension of the disused quarry on the opposite side of the road. The fields N. of the road are under plough, but there is no Ro. material visible. (7)
No Ro building material has been revealed during the ploughing of fields (a) to N and S of OS siting at ST 49702909. The area was under crop at time of ground inspection. (8)
SO 60 Listed as the site of a Roman villa. (9)
