Summary : A Roman coin hoard was found in the eastern extremity of Ham Hill hillfort and is held in Christ Church Library, Oxford.. 383 coins are still contained in the course grey cooking pot in which they were found. Some coins were removed to the 'Wake' collection (one of Trajan and one of Marius were mentioned). Still remaining are:- 7 Gallienus, AD 253-68); 6 Postumus, (AD 260-9); 11 Claudius Gothicus, (AD 268-70); 93 Victorinus, (AD 269-71); 119 Tetricus I, (AD 271-3); 41 Tetricus II and 106 3rd cent. radiates. [This hoard may originally have formed part of the hoard found in 1882 in the same locality - see ST 41 NE 9]. A late 3rd century hoard. |
