More information : [ST 36176370] Castle Batch [G.T.]. (1)

This is a mound 160 ft. in diameter and 17 ft. high, with a hollow in the centre 75 ft. in diameter. It is surrounded by a shallow ditch, 15-25 feet wide with an entrance on the South-west. (2). Bramble (3) and O.G.S. Crawford (4) infer it to be a castle mound. (2-4)

This is a well preserved motte but its surrounding ditch has been partially obliterated by ploughing and modern field banks. The hollow in the top of the motte is an original feature and a gap in the south-west quadrant probably indicates the position of the entrance gateway. (See G.Ps. AO/65/42/7 & 8). (5)

Air photographs (not specified) seem to show a possible bailey enclosure attached to the motte at Castle Batch. (6)

Additional references (7-8)

A rapid examination of air photography (9a) shows the motte but does not seem to indicate any bailey. (9)

The earthworks of this castle can be seen on lidar imagery.(10)
