More information : [ST 3983 2564] Roman Coins & Pottery found 1865 [T.I.] (1) Roman tesserae, coins (Trajan, Ant. Pius and many later), Samian and other sherds, shale whorls, bronze fragments and other small objects were found in 1865, at Stanchester, 700 yards east of Curry River church. A collection of Roman and other remains from Stanchester, Curry Rivel were presented to Taunton Museum by W.W.Munckton (3) and the museum also has a finely worked flint knife from Stanchester in the Walter collection (4). Haverfield accepts the finds as from a house or villa. The name appears as 'Stankestlas' in a 10th c. charter and may come from caestel and not ceaster. The site is scheduled. (2-5) The O.S. siting falls in a nursery garden. There are no surface indications of a building and the owner of the garden has not found anything of significance. The Munckton collection in Taunton Museum includes coins of Commodus and Gallienus (Acc. 876 N 2 & 3) from this site. (6)
