Summary : Built as a corn exchange and guildhall in 1834 to replace the earlier marked hall (see ST 30 NW 5). Refaced in the 20th century and now the town hall. The building is of Ham Hill stone ashlar with a slate roof. The classical style building has a T-shaped plan. The building is of two storeys with a symmetrical five window range, the central three are set forward under a two-storey hexastyle Doric portico with the continuous plinth forming a low wall to the loggia.The interior, except for the council chamber and mayor's parlour, were remodelled in the 1970s. |
