Summary : Country house, the remnant of a mansion, built shortly before 1779, reduced to its present size circa 1830 and further altered in the mid 20th century. The original mansion included a central courtyard with stables and offices in a large undercroft, which still survives. Probably built on the site of an earlier moated fortified house.
More information : [ST 23923526] Enmore Castle [T.I.] (1) The original castle at Enmore is said to have been pulled down in the 18th c. and a large mansion, of which the present house is only a remnant, was built shortly before 1779. Collinson (3) described a dry moat surrounding the building and Mackenzie (4) accepts this as part of the defences of the earlier manor house. There is a 1762 (5) account of a drawbridge over this moat. Pevsner gives a detailed description of the house, which was reduced to its present size c.1830. (2-5) There is no trace of a moat surrounding Enmore Castle, but its course may be represented by underground brick-lined cellarage which encloses the house on the E. W & S. sides.
