Summary : Country house reusing the buildings of Cannington Priory, a Benedictine Nunnery, which was dissolved in 1536. The buildings were altered circa 1580, during the early 18th century and in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of sandstone rubble, brick, render and ashlar with tile and slate roofs. |
More information : (ST 25603975) Somerset Farm Institute (NAT) (1) II Somerset Farm x Institute (Canningtton Court) On the site of a Priory of Benedictin Nuns founded in 1138. Present buildings are ranged round an inner quadrangle and date mostly from C.16/C.17 but with C.18 alterations and additions. (2) Cannington Court (part of Somerset Farm Institute) Lay wing of a Priory of Benedictine Nuns founded by Robert de Courcei c1138, (which stood East of the Church of St Mary (qv)). Priory dissolved 1536; alterations by Edward Rogers after he acquired the property in 1538, particularly c1580; further alterations by Clifford family, particularly early C18; some C19 and C20 internal division. Random red sandstone rubble; some brick to entrance elevation and a section rendered; moulded cornice, ashlar parapet with a coping; predominantly triple Roman tile roofs, some hipped; some slate.
