More information : ST 249255. Iron Age occupation and an extensive Medieval settlement were revealed by excavation. The site, bisected by the A38 road, was demarcated by a ditch 2.0m wide and 1.5m deep with a slight internal bank (enclosing an area circa 150m by 75m). The earliest features were linear ditches and nebulous pits associated with earlier Iron Age pottery. The moated Medieval settlement included ditches and timber structures of at least five successive phases. One structure, 20m by 15m, appeared to be an aisled timber building. Pottery indicates an Iron Age date and an almost continuous occupation during the Medieval and post Medieval periods. (1-2)
