Summary : A bowl barrow located on Brown Down in the eastern region of the Blackdown Hills. The barrow survives as an irregular rise in the ground level, but was previously recorded as 23 metres from east to west and 18.5 metres from north to south. Surrounding the mound is a ditch from which material was quarried during its construction. This has become infilled over the years and survives as a buried feature approximately 2.5 metres wide, giving the barrow a maximum overall diameter of 28 metres. Scheduled. |
More information : [ST 23781246] TUMULUS [O.E.] (1) There is an extremely vague and unsurveyable rise in the ground at the position indicated above. It is in an area of gravel bearing soil, heather and bracken covered, and might well be a natural rise. Nothing was found during research to account for the published entry. (2) Listed as Otterford 9, but not located. (3) This field has recently been reclaimed and is now pasture. The O.S. siting coincides with a vague swelling, but this cannot be certainly identified as a barrow. The barrow is not shown on the Otterford Tithe Map. (4)
