More information : [ST 1351 4134] Tumulus [G.T.] (1) East Quantoxhead 15:- a truncated bowl, 18 paces x 2 ft. (2) This squarish low mound of earth and stone is a disturbed barrow. Published survey (25") revised. (3) No change. (4)
A large cairn lies to the west of the Greenway track at ST 1351 4134. It comprises a low, circualr stony mound, mostly covered with turf, with some bracken and heather. The mound is 19m in diameter and stands to a maximum of 1.2m high. Several small depressions on the top of the mound are robbing pits, apparently of some antiquity. A central depression, 3m x 2m x 0.8m deep also appears to be the remains of a robbing pit. The mound is rather disturbed, and could well have been ploughed over, and perhaps incorporated into the field system visible on this spur. The cairn is a good example of a large platform cairn at the head of an un-named combe to the west and also on a false crest of the Greenway spur overlooking the coast and the Bristol Channel. The cairn was recorded as part of the EH survey of the Quantock Hills AONB (5).
