More information : [ST 1880 3958] ST. MICHAEL'S CHURCH [G.T.] (Site of) (1) St. Michael's Church, Nether Stowey, stood near the castle on the west side of the town, but no vestiges remain of the building. (2) The O.S. siting is corroborated by Collinson. This position, which would have been just outside the castle gate (ST 13 NE 4), is occupied by a kitchen garden and there is no trace of the church. (3) Only a few odd fragments of Norman masonry remain of the church of Saint Michael. Its position and dedication may indicate an early site, possibly of pre-Conquest origin although it may have been built in association with the castle. It now lies beneath an allotment. (Site shown on map, p. 112, agrees with O.S. siting). (4)
The church was probably a dependent chapel of Nether Stwey Church. (5)
ST 1860 3957: Site of Norman Church located within Stowey Castle and linked to it by a hollow way now only visible as a shallow ditch. The scheduling also includes the castle, incorporating a motte, 2 baileys and a stone keep, a Medieval kiln site and the remains of a Post Medieval mill and mill pond. (6) |
