More information : [ST 18413778] Chapel [GT] (remains of) [NAT] (1) Remains of an apparently late 13th. cent. chapel (42 x c25 ft.) on the south side of Seven Wells Combe. The west wall is intact and shows traces of a pointed arched doorway and contemporary window. The other walls are almost levelled to the ground. The chapel is mentioned in 1534-5 (a). (2,3) The walls of the building can be traced, but they are nowhere more than 0.9m. high. The west wall has fallen, but material from it, including door and window mouldings, remain on the site. (4)

The fragmentary remains of a late 13th or early 14th century chapel were recorded as part of the EH archaeological survey of the Quantock Hills AONB. Some worked stone was identified and drawn. The surrounding earthworks were also planned (see ST 13 NE 22). The work written up in an EH archaeological investigation survey report (6,7). |
