BOWL BARROW 650M NORTH WEST OF ELWORTHY BARROWS HILLFORT

DESCRIPTION + /

A large bowl barrow on the eastern edge of the Brendon Hills, in an area known locally as Higher Hill, circa 650 metres north west of Elworthy Barrows hillfort. It is an irregular mound up to approximately19.5 metres in diameter and 1.2 metres high. A surrounding quarry ditch survives as a buried feature up to 2 metres wide. A partial excavation of the barrow is reported in 1833 when 'a ring of stones enclosing a quantity of ashes' were found along with a stone or flint spearhead. A shallow depression on the mound surface is thought to relate to this episode.
