More information : [NY 9408 6943] TURRET 25A [GSC] (site of) [T.I.] (1)
In 1959, a ten foot square excavation, taken down to a depth of four feet, was made at the site of Turret 25a recorded by Hepple as "28 ft. west of the first fence east of Hill Head, and 40 ft. from the south lip of the ditch". [NY 9409 6944] No structure or any Roman material was found. A scatter of large sand-stones might have been mistaken by Hepple for a laid wall. "The position of this turret should probably be considered as still unknown." (2-3)
The site falls on a narrow grass verge between a modern road and the Wall ditch. There are no visible remains of a turret here or in the vicinity. (4)
The turret was excavated in 1930 to find its position only (5a). Hepple's site for the Roman turret lies under the military Road; there is no surface trace although there is a slight mound, 0.4m high on the S lip of the ditch at NY 94086943; this could be an excavation spoil heap. (5)
