More information : [NY 9606 6925] Milecastle 24 [GSC] (Site of) [T.I.] (1)
In the north-east corner of the first field following the rough ground, 26 yds west of the field wall on the south of the road, the platform of milecastle 24 may be quite distinctly observed. It was found in 1930 to be fifty feet wide internally, with side walls 10ft. thick. (2-3)
Published survey (25") correct. The perimeter wall of the milecastle is extant as a turf covered bank 0.5m high, obscured, however, on the north east by quarry spoil. (4)
Remains of robber/excavation trenches and a large spoil heap, up to 1.2m high, were found on the site, but no real platform survives. The trenches are up to 0.3m deep and the platform scarp to the west is up to 0.4m high. The milecastle is possibly of the long axis type. NB The area was surveyed in high vegetation. (5)
