Historic England Research Records

Monument Number 17434

Hob Uid: 17434
Location :
Northumberland
Otterburn
Grid Ref : NY8715094460
Summary : A village and pele tower are recorded at Greenchester. A series of earthworks, interpreted as the remains of one or two cottages, an associated garth and a fishpond are all that survive above ground.
More information : (NY 87009442)(2) There has been an old tower of the usual kind (pele) at Greenchester. The present village of half a dozen
cottages stands on the high ground. (1)(2)

The only remains (presumably of Greenchester) are the turf-covered foundations of a single range of buildings at NY 87159446. These appear to represent the site of one or two cottages with an associated garth and circular pond. Nothing about the foundations suggests the former existence of a tower, neither do they merit the title of 'village', although remains may have been more extensive in Horsley's time. Surveyed at 1:2500. (3)

Small circular mark visible on APs. (4)
