| Summary : A Second World War military camp or workers hostel situated to the east of Moor Green is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1945. The camp consisted of accommodation huts and and larger communal buildings connected by a road network. It was one of a number of camps near Corsham associated with the wartime use of the underground quarries for ammunition storage, factories or military headquarters. Air photos taken in 2009 show that elements of the original road layout survive as do a few buildings but the majority have been demolished and the area redeveloped. |
| More information : A Second World War military camp or workers hostel is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1945. This was situated to the east of Moor Green at ST 8624 6903. The camp consisted of accommodation huts and and larger communal buildings connected by a road network. It was one of a number of camps near Corsham associated with the wartime use of the underground quarries for ammunition storage, factories or military headquarters. Air photos taken in 2009 show that elements of the original road layout survive as do a number of buildings. Others have been demolished and the areas redeveloped.(1-2) |
