More information : The former course of the London Road running NW from the medieval bridge over the River Avon into the village of Lacock can be seen as slight earthworks on lidar images and aerial photographs in the padock immediately to the south of Lacock Abbey. The present road follows a course which appears to have been re-routed at some time in the first half of the 18th century. The buildings at the edge of the village followed the original course of the road. Where the new road meets this the original course can be seen as a widening and altering of the road alignment. The former course is depicted on Lacock estate maps of 1714, but by 1726 when the next estate map was drawn up the road had been angled onto a more westerly course to take it away from house and expand the priviage grounds of the Abbey. Earthworks between the new and old roads may be former medieval village remains or perhaps part of the post medieval landscape garden (Monument Number: 1579251). (1) |
