More information : A possible medieval or post medieval trackway and causeway leading from Lacock Abbey to a form oxbow island in New Bridge Mead visible as slight earthworks on lidar images, centred at ST 9218 6828. The western part is seen as a slightly incised hollow way which appears to have been truncated by the post medieval ha ha around the present house at Lacock. This track leads SE across the meadow to the site of a former footbridge over the river. It continues as a slightly sinuous causeway leading SE across the mead to a dry loop of the river. Here are the apparent footings of a second small bridge over the river bed. The faint traces of a sub-circular builiding foundation or enclosure can be seen as a slight earthwork on the oxbow island. This hollow-way was noted as a substantial feature leading to a collapsed bridge over the river Avon and continuing beyond the river, during fieldwork for EH's National Archaeological Identification Survey West Wiltshire Pilot, in 2014. (2) |
