Summary : Remains of probable pele at Smalesmouth. The 1 metre thick stone walls survive up to maximum of 1.6 metres high and define an L-shaped building, thought to have been a pele tower. The remains of probably contemporary, stone-walled stock enclosures lie to the north of the tower, suggesting that the site may have been a fortified farmstead.
More information : NY 73988548 Smalemouth Pele (rems of) (1) The remains of a building measuring 6.0m square internally between walls 1.0m thick which stand to a maximum height of 1.6m. An entrance is in the west end of the north wall. The building has at one time continued to the east in an 'L' shaped extension which has been extensively robbed and is now only visible as low (0.2m maximum height) turf-covered footings. About 30.0m to the north are remains of probably contemporary turf-covered stone-walled stock enclosures set up against a field wall. The whole appears to have been a defensive farmstead incorporating a pele. Surveyed at 1:2500. (2) This building is distinctly bastle-shaped. (3)
