Summary : A former chalk pit excavated to provide chalk for the cement industry which was established on the Hoo Peninsula in the 19th century, continuing into the 20th century. This pit was incorporated into the network of ditches and natural features which formed the Second World War anti-invasion stopline which extended between the Medway and Thames. A broad anti-tank ditch extended south-east from the eastern end of this pit. The cropmark traces of this ditch have been recorded separately (NMR Monument number 1545118).These features were mapped from aerial photographs as part of the English Heritage: Hoo Peninsula Landscape Project. |
More information : A former chalk pit centred at TQ 7275 7543 which was excavated to provide chalk for the cement industry which was established on the Hoo Peninsula in the 19th century, continuing into the 20th century. This pit was incorporated into the network of ditches and natural features which formed the Second World War anti-invasion stopline which extended between the Medway and Thames. A broad anti-tank ditch extended south-east from the eastern end of this pit. The cropmark traces of this ditch have been recorded separately (NMR Monument number 1545118).
