More information : The four possible bomb craters are centred at TR 0787 2274 to the west of Merrit Road, and are visible scattered across an area measuring approximately 123m east to west and 129m north to south. The westernmost two craters are perfectly circular in plan view, and have a narrow banked rim around the edge. It is thought this may be a result of the loose shingle characteristic of the area, which would have been upcast by the explosion. These two craters are located and sized as follows: TR 0783 2278, 14m in diameter; TR 0784 2266, nine metres in diameter.
The easternmost two craters are more irregularly-shaped than the others; being slightly sub-circular in plan view. This is unusual for bomb craters, although it is possible that these two had been disturbed by the installation of the barbed wire apron between them (Monument Number 1533902). These two craters are located and sized as follows: TR 0791 2274, roughly 13m in diameter; TR 0794 2278, roughly 10m in diameter.
By the time of the vertical aerial photograph of 1983; the sites of the three northernmost craters of the group were masked by scrub and undergrowth, so it is not possible to say whether or not they had been filled in. The southernmost and smallest bomb crater was still faintly visible as an extant earthwork (1-3). |
