Summary : The remains of a possible medieval/post medieval settlement are visible as earthworks on lidar and air photographs. Identifiable elements include hollow ways, platforms, rectilinear enclosures, trackways, ditches, a field boundary and a curvilinear enclosure. The settlement is situated south of Whitley Castle Roman fort and it is probable that some elements date to this period. In particular, a linear earthwork, heading north towards the fort appears to underlie medieval ridge and furrow. The features are extant on the latest 2009 lidar. |
