Monument Number 15176

Hob Uid: 15176
Location :
Northumberland
Bardon Mill
Grid Ref : NY7892068830
Summary : Post-Roman cist incorporated in a stone water tank, probably Roman, on display within Housesteads fort. It is typical of Early Christian cist graves of the 4th-8th century.
More information : [NY 78926883] Inside a stone water-tank west of the turret 36B is a post Roman cist of the Dark Ages, and near it were found traces of an apsidal structure, which may have been as late. (1)

The tank and cist are 'in situ' and have been surveyed at 1:2500. The cist utilises two sides of the tank with rough stone slabs forming the other two sides. It is uncapped. There are no visible remains of the 'apsidal structure'. (2)

(The apsidal building is now recorded separately as NY 76 NE 214)

Both cist and water tank are on display in situ in Housesteads fort. The water tank is presumably Roman given the position inside the fort. (3)

The cist is fairly typical of Early Christian cist burials of the 4th-8th centuries. It is possible that it is associated with a possible chapel site to the South (NY76NE214), and may be Roman, although it is more likely to be Post-Roman since it lies within a Roman water tank.(4)
