More information : A First World War firing range, practice trenches and unknown features in the form of rectilinear enclosures and rows of small mounds are visible as earthwork on historic air photos at SE293 726. The crenellated plan of the practice frontline trench and small sap trenches can be seen around SE2959 7259. Between SE2937 7260 and SE2935 7277 there are a number of parallel ditches and banks that may be the rifle butts and covered ways of a firing range. There are other earthworks of unknown function alongside Kirkby Road at SE2944 7274. These features are probably associated with Ripon Camp (UID 1517504). Also these features cut or overlie medieval or post medieval ridge and furrow (UID 1517491) and most appear to survive as earthworks on 2002 Google Earth air photos and 2006 lidar-derived images.
