Summary : The site of Roman turret 38A, part of the defences on Hadrian's Wall. Although Turret 38a is not itself visible, the roadway connecting it to the Military Way has possibly been identified as a very slight earthwork on air photographs. The width of the road is approximately 6 metres which is comparable to that of the Military Way. |

Turret 38A, located by exploratory excavation in 1911, is on the rising ridge a little west of Milking Gap. (2-3)

The turret was located in 1911 by F G Simpson (5a). There are no visible remains of the turret; the position can only be located to the general area NY 7687 6792. (5)

Although Turret 38a is not itself visible, the embanked roadway connecting it to the Military Way has possibly been identified as a very slight earthwork on air photographs and has been mapped as part of the Hadrian's Wall National Mapping Project. The road is centred at NY 76879 67907 and its width is approximately 6 metres which is comparable to that of the Military Way. (8)
