Summary : No. 85 Deansgate Arcade was probably built between 1892 and 1908. It is likely that the arcade no longer exists. Between 1908 and 1911, No. 85 Deansgate Arcade, Manchester, was the office for the North of England Society for Womens Suffrage (NESWS). Established as the Manchester National Society for Women's Suffrage (MNSWS) in 1865, the Society changed its name to the NESWS in 1897. All of the main suffrage societies underwent a name change at this time, which was essentially to create a more effective geographic structure of societies which would enable them to work in a more concentrated manner. In 1911, due to the presence of so many new societies in the north, the NESWS decided to change its name to the Manchester Society for Women's Suffrage. |
More information : Between 1908 and 1911, the office for the North of England Society for Women's Suffrage (NESWS) was located at 85 Deansgate Arcade, Manchester.
In that same year the NESWS joined the National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies along with 500 others around the country.
In 1911, due to the presence of so many new societies in the north, the NESWS decided to change its name to the Manchester Society for Women's Suffrage. (1)
According to the 1928 edition of the Kelly's directory No. 85 Deansgate Arcade was situated on the top floor of the arcade which was located between Parsonage Lane and St Mary's Street on the western side. (2)

According to the OS map dated 1892 (source 5) the arcade hadn't been built by this stage. It had been built by 1908 (see source 3) however, therefore suggesting a construction date of between 1892 and 1908.
It may be assumed that the arcade no longer exists since the shop footprints marked on the 1908 map aren't marked on the 2007 map (source 4). The building on the site is possibly a later rebuild. (6)
