More information : A possible medieval enclosure and ridge and furrow, trackways, field boundaries, ditches and drains of medieval and/or medieval date are visible as earthworks in the parish of Swainby with Allerthorpe on air photos and lidar derived images at SE334 854. The possible medieval enclosure lies at SE3342 8572, this and a nearby ditch are clearly overlain by the ridge and furrow and may be associated with the settlement identified to the immediate north (see UID 53847). The ridge and furrow lies between the settlement UID53847, the possible abbey and settlement remains UID 83870 and Swainby Grove. The plough ridges are aligned east to west and are grouped into fields by field boundaries or ditches (possibly of later date) and to the west they terminate at the long field boundary and trackway that runs north to south through Swainby Grove. At SE335 852 a straightened section of Healam Beck cuts across the plough ridges and the relict course survives as an earthwork at SE3368 8528. (1-5) |
