Summary : The former panda pit at London Zoo was constructed in about 1950 and in 1959-60 was converted into a seal pond by Franz Stengelhofen, the zoo's architect. It was later used as a Cormorant Pond. It is a circular concrete-lined pond, with a diameter of 13 metres, enclosed by a low perimeter stone wall. In the centre is a rocky concrete island.
