Summary : A former otter pond situated at the northern entrance of the West Tunnel at London Zoo. The pond was constructed in 1922 and originally comprised a square pond with a central island. In 1969 the otters were rehoused to make way for two black beavers which had been given to the Queen by the Hudson's Bay Company. As a result in 1971 the enclosure was relandscaped as a sunken feature with a deep water area, rockwork and shrub landscaping. This design was the work of the Zoo's architect John Toovey. In 1992 the enclosure was adapted for iguanas which involved the backfilling of the water areas and relandscaping of the rockwork. |
