Summary : The site of an army camp identified on 1941 aerial photographs. The camp consists of a few permanent buildings and a number of large tents and smaller bell tents. There are a number of seagull trenches and practice trenches dug nearby and the camp may have been used for training purposes and could also have been associated with a nearby firing range.The camp was used by the British Army until 1944. From July to October 1940 the 7th Battalion of the East Yorkshire Regiment and the 8th Battalion of the Duke of Wellingtons were based at the camp before they moved down south. A Battalion of the Bedford and Hertfordshire Regiment were also at the camp in 1940.A later POW camp was sited on part of the camp site in 1944. |
