Summary : The Nuffield Building is a research centre at London Zoo. It was designed in 1962, built in 1964-65 by Michael Huckstepp of Llewelyn-Davies, Weeks and Musgrave and was originally known as the Nuffield Institute of Comparative Medicine for the study of disease in animals. It houses the Zoological Society of London Meeting Rooms and research laboratories used by the Institute of Zoology. This is an example of Brutalist architecture, the ground and basement floors are built of shuttered concrete and the first floor of coarse aggregate facing on pre-cast panels. Continous windows are on the long elevations of this floor. The ground floor is divided by the northern approach of the East Tunnel (Monument HOB UID 619108). The eastern side houses the Zoological Society of London meeting rooms. The ground floor also contains a lecture room. The upper floor contains research laboratories. |
