Summary : A Norman style folly comprising a summerhouse, adjoining curtain wall and gatehouse set on the bank of the inner edge of the moat to the inner bailey of the medieval castle at Benington Lordship. The folly was probably designed by Thomas Smith, and constructed 1835-38 by James Pulham I (1773-1838) his brother Obadiah Pulham (1802-1880) for George Proctor and is the only surviving example of James Pulham I's work. It is built of flint and Pulhamite modelled to resemble ashlar, the hidden part of the summerhouse is built of red brick with pitched tile roof. |
