More information : The existence of a civilian settlement associated with the Roman fort at Brough (NY 71 SE 1) has long been assumed on the basis of discoveries of bronze objects and other finds (see NY 71 SE 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 17, 19, 34, 35.) The large number of bronze finds indicates the existence of a local bronze workshop of 2nd century date. (1)
Trial excavations were carried out in 1972 to the east of the fort, and confirmed the existence of a vicus (area: NY 792 140). A complex series of features was located, including floors, walls and pits, timber buildings and the remains of a well-preserved bath-house of several periods (see NY 71 SE 78). The finds indicated occupation in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. (2)
