Summary : An intermittent section of Dere Street Roman road is visible where it approaches and runs through Cataractonium Roman town and towards the banks of the River Swale.
More information : An intermittent section of Dere Street Roman road (UID 1031439) is visible where it approaches and runs through Cataractonium Roman town (UID 52316) towards the banks of the River Swale. This section is visible between SE2245 9920 and SE2270 9892, with a gap at SE2257 9909 where it is cut by Catterick Road. For the most part it appears as a parchmarked agger, up to 7m wide, but around SE2252 9917 there are traces of an eastern road-side ditch. It enters the outer known boundaries of the town at SE2262 9902 and forms the main axis for the town¿s layout. (1-2)
