Summary : Post-medieval to 20th century limestone quarries are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs. The quarries are located at Churchill Batch on the site of a possible Iron Age fort, Dinghurst Camp (ST45NW 32). The area is defined by shallow workings and spoil heaps on the summit of Churchill batch forming a rough and hummocky landscape, covering an area that measures 326m N-S by 177m E-W. The eastern side is defined by large stone quarries which have been much extended from 1885 to 1931 as seen on the Ordnance Survey Maps (1885 & 1930-1931). The quarry workings are still visible as earthworks on aerial photographs taken in 1989. |
More information : Post medieval to 20th century limestone quarries are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs and have been mapped by the Mendip Hills AONB NMP project. The quarries are located at Churchill Batch on the site of a possible Iron Age fort, Dinghurst Camp (ST45NW 32/HOB UID 194536). The area is defined by shallow workings and spoil heaps on the summit of Churchill batch forming a rough and hummocky landscape, covering an area that measures 326m N-S by 177m E-W. The eastern side is defined by large stone quarries centred at ST 4452 5912 and ST 4455 5921, which have been much extended from 1885 to 1931 as seen on the Ordnance Survey Maps (1885 & 1930-1931).
