More information : A Second World War pillbox and an arrangement of barbed wire along the north-east side of RAF Catterick are visible as structures on historic air photographs at SE244 977. The pillbox is at SE2438 9775. It appears to be intact on recent photographs and now sits at the end of a residential road. The barbed wire partially encircled the pillbox and ran along the edge of the airfield between SE2430 9783 and SE2507 9720. This was probably part of a system of defences that encircled RAF Catterick UID1391330 (see also UIDs 1485642, 1485653, 1485675, 1486058, 1486086, 1486088 and 1486090). The barbed wire was probably removed shortly after the end of the war. (1-3) |
