More information : Probable Roman road running towards the east of Aballava fort, visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The road is visible for an area of approximately 115m east to west and is between 2m and 4m in width. Centred at NY 3305 5909, a 'dog-leg' is visible creating parellel branches of the road. Flanking both branches of the road is evidence for the vicus (see NY 35 NW 29). (1)
Excavation (2) and Collingwood's plan (3) support the identification of the south branch of the road as the Military Way. The path of the road to the east is conjectural and is masked by the modern road but the cropmarks suggest that the Military Way could lie to the north of the modern road and its assumed alignment. |
