More information : (NY 776 044) Cairns (NR) (1)
A group of 3 cairns: (a) 80 yds WSW of the ford, is about 66' in diameter and 4 1/2' high. (b) 45 yds S of (a) is about 20' in diameter and 1 1/2'-2' high (2). This was excavated by Greenwell (CLXIX), who suggested that the larger stones found at the base were probably the remains of an enclosing circle. In the centre, 1 1/4' below the natural surface, was a hollow, covered by a flat stone. Scattered among the earth with which this hollow was filled were some burnt bones of a child. There was also a portion of what was perhaps a bone pin and a BA incense-cup (3), (now in Brit Mus). Cairn (c) 70 yds ESE of (b) is about 24' in diameter and 2 1/2' high (2). (2-3)

The group of cairns, situated at the base of Round Hill, on the south bank of the Eden, were visited by RCHME in 1993. The central pit of (a) (centred NY 7765 0445) measures 4.5m in diameter and is 1.2m deep. On the top of the cairn numerous water worn cobbles are visible. Cairn (b) (centred NY 7766 0441) is 7.5m in diameter and has a slightly stony central pit, 2.5m in diameter and 0.4m deep. Cairn (c) (centred NY 7768 0441) is situated on the edge of a low SE -facing scarp. It is 7.5m by 6.5m and has a shallow central pit 1.8m in diameter. Approximately 40m ENE of (a), beside the river, is a mound, now partly destroyed, which may be the remains of another cairn. It is 5.5m in diameter overall and is turf-covered. (5)
