Summary : A Second World War type 24 pillbox, visible as an extant building with blast wall, was mapped from aerial photographs taken in 1947. Located on the coast at the edge of Portbury Wharf, adjacent to Portishead Dock and centred at ST 4777 7724, the pillbox is an irregular hexagon in plan. The rearward wall, longer than the other five at about 4.5 metres, contains the entranceway and is protected by a separate linear blast wall, about 2 metres long and 0.5 metres wide. It is probable that the pillbox is manned by personnel based at the military camp and heavy anti aircraft battery at Sheepway (ST 47 NE 131). Aerial photographs taken in 1978 show that the pillbox has been demolished. |
