Anston Quarry

Hob Uid: 1467330
Location :
Rotherham
North and South Anston
Grid Ref : SK5172084841
Summary : Building stone from theMagnesian limestone, part of the Cadeby Formation of Late Permian Age, has been quarried over a wide area within and around both North and South Anston. The stone quarried from North Anston provided most of the stone for the upper part of the Houses of Parliament. These quarries were used for the latter after the Bolsover and Mansfield Quarries failed to meet demand. The stone was hauled the 2 miles to Dog Kennel Wharf (SK59008245), was transported via the Chesterfield Canal, and then the tidal Trent, to Westminster. It was also used in the Geological Museum of Landon, but demand dropped after 1913. The site has been partly developed for public housing, with exposed working faces to the rear.
