Summary : A Second World War bombing decoy at Burnham Sutton that was built to deflect enemy bombing from Royal Air Force Bircham Newton airfield. This was a 'Q-type' night decoy, which displayed lights simulating an active airfield. It later served as a decoy for Royal Air Force Docking airfield, which was a satelite airfield of Bircham Newton. It is referenced as being in operation during 1942. A covered control building with a blast wall stands on the site in good condition. Further bombing decoy sites for Bircham Newton airfield were located at Coxford Heath, Sedgeford and Salthouse, and a second bombing decoy for Docking airfield was located at North Creake. |
More information : A Second World War 'Q-type' bombing decoy located at Burnham Sutton (TF 840 391). This was constructed to deflect enemy night bombing from RAF Bircham Newton, and later for RAF Docking. It is referenced as being in use on 12-AUG-1942. Further bombing decoy sites for RAF Bircham Newton were located at Coxford Heath (TF 828 307), Sedgeford (TF 737 363) and Salthouse (TG 080 425). (1)
