Summary : A Second World War bombing decoy located at Kilham, which was built to deflect enemy bombing from Royal Air Force Driffield airfield. This was a 'Q-type' night decoy that displayed a series of lights simulating an active airfield. It is reported as being in operation on 12th August 1942. The site has been given over to agricultural use. Further bombing decoys for Royal Air Force Driffield were located at Skerne and Skipsea. |
More information : A Second World War bombing decoy located at Kilham (TA 083 634). This was a 'Q-type' decoy to deflect enemy night bombing from RAF Driffield. Reported as being in operation on 12-AUG-1942. (1)
No original features of the bombing decoy survive, the site being given over to agriculture by 1970 as determined by aerial photography. (2)
Further bombing decoys for RAF Driffield were located at Skerne (TA 034 552) and Skipsea (TA 183 537). NGR concords with that given in source 1. (3)
