Lumpsey Ironstone Mine

Summary : Between the Cleveland Mineral Railway and the Whitby Redcar and Middlesbrough Railway is Lumpsey Ironstone Mine, south of Brotton. The mine shafts were sunk to a depth of 564 ft during 1882 and the site contained spoil heaps, an electrical engine house, engine beds and other unidentified buildings related to the mining industry. A Waddle Fanhouse was also present on this site after replacing a Guibal fan during 1925. The mine finally ceased production during 1954. From 1903/1904 stone from the Carlin How workings was brought out using the Lumpsey shaft and from 1954 the site was taken over by North Skelton Mine-leaving only the pumping and ventilation systems in situ.
